Today is Earth Day and we couldn’t be more happy to celebrate by letting you know what we’ve been up to, to do our bit for the planet!

Our partnership with Planet Mark for Earth Day

At Avrion, we are extremely proud to announce that we have begun working with Planet Mark towards achieving Business Certification.

Planet Mark logo“We are delighted that Avrion has joined the Planet Mark community and is working towards achieving Business Certification. We look forward to seeing Avrion progress on its sustainability journey and reduce its carbon emissions throughout this critical decade.” Steve Malkin, CEO and Founder of Planet Mark

Planet Mark is an internationally recognised carbon reduction and net zero specialist, with over 10 years of experience. It is committed to helping business of all sizes find solutions to reduce carbon emissions, secure net zero targets and generate long term business value. Operating at the centre of climate tech, advisory and legislation, their unified model helps businesses achieve tangible results that stand for meaningful climate action.

We are working towards achieving Planet Mark Business Certification which covers Scope 1, 2 and some ‘core’ Scope 3 emissions that are easily under organisational control. Planet Mark Members must reduce their measured carbon footprint by at least 2.5% every year but targeting a 5% annual reduction in carbon emissions is recommended.

Once we have achieved Business Certification we will then be able to make informed decisions and take the next steps required to make the transition to net zero.  Alongside the practical, business side of the partnership, we will also continue to educate and encourage all of our colleagues to contribute to cutting our carbon emissions and take more responsibility, from turning the lights out to volunteering where possible, and everything in between.

Becoming a Planet Mark Certified Business is not just for us – it’s for our customers too. We want to play this forward, hoping our customers will take inspiration and support us, as well as making their own progress in reducing carbon and being committed to do more good. We can’t wait to get started!

Trees and bees

Earth Day: Bees

Year on year, we have been building our ESG (environmental, social & governance) footprint, having now supported Ecologi for over 3 years, both with tree planting and other projects to help combat climate change. Our progress with Ecologi has been steady and we are very happy to have over 7,600 trees planted in our own “forest”, as well as supporting 43 separate projects, ranging from turning methane to electricity in Brazil to distributing cleaner cooking stoves in Kenya, and from wind power in Mexico to solar power in India.

Last year, we also started sponsoring our own beehive with SW Honey Farms. It’s become more and more clear how climate change is affecting our wildlife, and even the humble bee can be directly affected by this with loss of habitat and food sources as flowers decline. Adopting beehives can introduce thousands of pollinating bees back. This is brilliant for the food chain! We are looking forward to a visit to our beehive to see how busy our bees are very soon!

Other ways we support our planet this Earth Day

Mudlarks cafeCloser to home (really close) is a charity we support, Mudlarks Café – it is literally next door to our office. Not only is Mudlarks Hertford’s only vegetarian and vegan café, looking at sustainability above all else, but it does more than that – it provides working opportunities for people of all abilities and provides training, alongside paid work, for adults with learning disabilities, allowing everyone to take part. The food is delicious and follows the English seasons. From “plot to plate” is their motto. With over 30 members of staff working on the allotment, in the café, the forest school, and in the office, it’s a great local employer too!

And finally, we don’t just support sustainability as a company, but individually too, including various members of Avrion staff switching to an electric car, and making more informed choices with our travel and buying habits.
